Dental Crowns in Dallas, TX

Protecting the teeth worth saving with restorations that look and feel completely natural.

A dental crown is one of the most common and most versatile restorative treatments in dentistry, and for good reason. When a tooth is too damaged, too decayed, or too compromised to hold up on its own but still has a root worth preserving, a crown gives it the protection and structure it needs to function reliably for years to come.

At DTX Dental Studio, we have been placing crowns for patients across Dallas and the Lake Highlands community since 2002. Dr. Carson Lackey approaches every crown case with a straightforward goal: save the tooth, restore it properly, and make it look like nothing ever happened.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over the entire visible portion of a tooth, from the gumline up. Once bonded in place, it restores the tooth’s shape, size, strength, and appearance while shielding the underlying structure from further damage or decay.

Think of it as a permanent protective shell. The natural tooth remains intact underneath, anchoring the crown and maintaining the bone and tissue around it, while the crown itself takes on the full function and appearance of a healthy tooth above the gumline.

At DTX Dental Studio, every crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory from precise impressions of your teeth. That custom fabrication process is what allows the final restoration to fit correctly, function comfortably, and blend naturally with the surrounding teeth.

When a Crown Is the Right Call

One of the things Dr. Carson is intentional about is making sure patients understand why a crown is being recommended before they agree to one. A crown is a meaningful investment and patients deserve to know exactly what problem it is solving.

Here are the most common situations where a crown is genuinely the right answer.

Cracked or Fractured Teeth

A crack in a tooth is more serious than it looks. Even a crack that is not yet causing pain can deepen under the pressure of chewing, eventually reaching the nerve or splitting the tooth entirely. A crown placed over a cracked tooth holds it together, distributes biting force evenly across the surface, and prevents the crack from progressing into something that cannot be fixed.

Patients from Lake Highlands and the surrounding Dallas area come in regularly with cracked teeth that have gone unaddressed for longer than they realized, often because the crack was not visible and the discomfort was easy to dismiss. Catching it early and placing a crown is almost always a simpler and less costly outcome than waiting.

Teeth With Large or Failing Fillings

A filling that has been in place for many years eventually reaches the end of its lifespan. It can crack, wear down, pull away from the tooth margin, or simply no longer provide adequate coverage for the portion of the tooth it was meant to protect. When a filling is too large or too old to be reliably replaced with another filling, a crown is the stronger, more durable solution.

Severely Decayed Teeth

When decay has progressed to the point where there is not enough healthy tooth structure left to support a filling, a crown steps in to restore what remains. Rather than extracting a tooth that still has a viable root and surrounding bone, a crown allows us to preserve it and give it a new surface that functions fully.

After a Root Canal

A tooth that has undergone a root canal is significantly more brittle than a healthy tooth. The internal structure has been treated and sealed, but the remaining tooth walls are vulnerable to fracture under normal biting pressure. Placing a crown over a root canal treated tooth is standard practice and one of the most important steps in ensuring the tooth remains functional long term. Skipping it is one of the most common reasons root canal treated teeth eventually crack and are lost.

Cosmetic Reshaping

In some cases, a crown serves both a restorative and a cosmetic purpose. When a tooth is severely misshapen, worn down, or out of proportion with the surrounding teeth in a way that cannot be addressed with bonding or veneers alone, a crown can restore both the function and the appearance of the tooth in a single restoration.

What Our Crowns Are Made Of

The crowns placed at DTX Dental Studio are fabricated from tooth-colored materials designed to replicate the natural appearance of enamel. Rather than the old metal or metal-fused-to-porcelain crowns that left patients with dark lines at the gumline or an obvious silver glint when they smiled, modern ceramic and porcelain crowns are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.

The shade, shape, and size of every crown is carefully matched to the surrounding teeth so the restoration integrates naturally into your smile. Patients are often surprised at how invisible a well-made crown can be, even to people who see them every day.

Beyond aesthetics, these materials are durable, stain-resistant, and designed to hold up to the demands of daily use for many years when properly maintained.

The Crown Process at DTX Dental Studio

Your First Appointment

Dr. Carson begins with a thorough evaluation of the tooth to confirm that a crown is the appropriate treatment and that the root and surrounding bone are healthy enough to support one. He will explain what he finds and walk you through the process before anything begins.

Once treatment is confirmed, the tooth is gently shaped to create space for the crown, and precise impressions are taken to guide the fabrication of your custom restoration. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while your permanent crown is being crafted by the dental laboratory.

Your Second Appointment

When your permanent crown is ready, you come back in for the final fitting. Dr. Carson checks the fit, the bite, and the appearance carefully before permanently bonding the crown in place. Minor adjustments are made as needed until everything feels comfortable and looks right.

After Your Crown Is Placed

Crowns do not require any special maintenance beyond your normal oral hygiene routine. Brushing, flossing, and keeping up with regular exams and cleanings at DTX Dental Studio are all it takes to keep your crown in good shape for years. If you grind your teeth at night, a custom night guard is strongly recommended to protect both the crown and the surrounding teeth from excessive wear.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns

How long do crowns last?

With proper care, a well-placed crown can last many years. Longevity depends on the material, the quality of the fit, your oral hygiene habits, and whether factors like grinding are managed appropriately.

Does getting a crown hurt?

The preparation appointment is performed under local anesthesia so the tooth and surrounding area are fully numb throughout the process. Most patients find the experience far more comfortable than they anticipated. Some mild sensitivity afterward is normal and typically resolves within a few days.

Will my crown look like a natural tooth?

Yes. The crowns we place are custom shaded and shaped to match your surrounding teeth as closely as possible. Most patients find that even people who know them well cannot identify which tooth has a crown.

Is a crown covered by insurance?

Crowns are typically covered at least partially by most PPO dental insurance plans, particularly when placed for restorative reasons. Our team will verify your benefits before treatment begins so you have a clear picture of your out-of-pocket cost in advance.

What happens if I delay getting a crown?

A tooth that needs a crown and does not get one is at risk of further cracking, decay progression, or in the case of a root canal treated tooth, fracture. In most cases, delaying a crown means the situation becomes more complex and more costly to address down the road.

We Accept Most PPO Insurance Plans

Crown treatment is one of the most commonly covered restorative procedures under PPO dental plans. Our team handles the insurance verification process before your appointment so you know exactly what your plan covers and what to expect out of pocket. No surprises.
