Do Not Wait When Something Feels Wrong
Dental emergencies have a way of showing up at the worst possible time. What starts as minor discomfort can turn into serious pain, infection, or permanent damage if it does not get addressed quickly. If something does not feel right, trust that instinct and give us a call.
The sooner we see you, the more options we have. Waiting almost always makes things more complicated and more costly than they need to be.
Dental Emergencies We Treat
Knocked-Out Tooth
A knocked-out tooth is one of the few dental situations where every minute genuinely counts. If you act quickly and get to our office fast enough, there is a real chance the tooth can be saved. If the tooth is intact, keep it moist by placing it back in the socket if possible, or storing it in a small container of milk. Do not rinse it with water or let it dry out. Call us immediately at (214) 340-2111 and head straight to our office.
Broken or Chipped Tooth
A broken or chipped tooth is not just a cosmetic issue. Depending on how much of the tooth is affected, a fracture can expose the inner layers of the tooth to bacteria, leading to sensitivity, pain, and the risk of infection. Whether it happened during a meal, a fall, or a collision, come in and let Dr. Carson assess the damage. Treatment options will depend on the severity, but the earlier we see it the better the outcome.
Lost Filling or Crown
Losing a filling or crown leaves the underlying tooth vulnerable and often uncomfortable. You may notice increased sensitivity to temperature, pressure, or air almost immediately. In the meantime, avoid chewing on that side of your mouth and try to keep the area clean. Over-the-counter dental cement from a drugstore can serve as a temporary fix but it is not a substitute for coming in. We will get you back in as quickly as possible and restore the tooth properly.
Dental Abscess or Swelling
A dental abscess is a pocket of infection that forms at the root of a tooth or in the surrounding gum tissue. It is one of the more serious dental emergencies because the infection can spread beyond the mouth if it is not treated promptly. Signs of an abscess include significant swelling in the face or jaw, a persistent throbbing pain, fever, or a noticeable bump on the gums. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, do not wait it out. Call us right away.
What to Do While You Wait
Getting to our office quickly is always the priority, but here are a few things you can do in the meantime depending on what you are dealing with.
For pain and swelling, over-the-counter pain relievers and a cold compress applied to the outside of the face can help manage discomfort while you make your way in. For a lost crown or filling, dental cement from a pharmacy can offer temporary protection. For a knocked-out tooth, keep it moist and get here fast. And for any signs of spreading infection or swelling that is affecting your ability to breathe or swallow, go to your nearest emergency room immediately as this requires immediate medical attention beyond what a dental office can provide.
